Sexually Transmitted Infections In The Porn Industry

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the pornography industry often deals with the occupational health and safety issue in the adult entertainment industry, particularly with reference to exposure to sexually transmitted infections. This has been a source of intense controversy, as some performers have claimed that they have contracted STIs while working in the adult entertainment industry. Some of these performers have been blackmailed and have had their lives ruined. More commonly however, these performers have been either not paid fairly or have not been paid at all.

The primary issue here is the reality that there are numerous people that are now passing on STIs, both through their work environment and on a nightly basis, directly through to those that patronize the pornography industry. Many people have become so used to watching pornography that they often don’t realize that they may be passing on an STD to others, and therefore, are not taking any precautions when choosing to view it. In many cases, there are no warnings, or even guidelines associated with being exposed to the adult entertainment industry, and what with all the autograph signing and photo shoots that occur in this highly visualized world.

There are some very high profile celebrities that have had “sexually transmitted” infections caught on camera. One such name isaryn hyssop, who was exposed as a porn star by a Daily Mail reporter while the two were visiting the Bahamas. Hyssop tested positive for a bacterial infection soon after the fact, and since then has been subjected to constant scrutiny by the press and media, as well as the FDA. At this point, there are conflicting reports regarding whether she was tested positive for gonorrhea or HPV; some say that she was, while others say that the tests have been misinterpreted.

It would seem that the answer to the question of performers being tested positive for STIs in the adult film industry lies with those performers themselves. Performers are supposed to be tested during routine screening upon accepting employment with any company, and they are then monitored closely by company doctors. However, given the fact that performers are independent contractors, some work may be done outside of the company, and then their private medical records may become tainted. This is just one example of why the healthcare foundation recommends that independent contractors are thoroughly checked for STIs before working with any company that contracts with them. Unfortunately, the fact that some in the adult entertainment industry have been caught unaware by this fact has led to the foundation’s recommendation of testing for all performers at the start.

Unfortunately, since the information on Performances and Rates and the rates of contracting STIs by specific industries is hard to find, the only accurate statistics that we have regarding STI rates among the adult film industry are the rates per individual performer. Unfortunately, since this industry caters to both male and female performers, the rates per individual are probably much higher than the rates for the general population. This is also likely because performers are likely to be younger and more active sexually, which increases the likelihood of having an infectious disease. However, given that this is an industry that thrives on role-play and fantasy, it is easy to assume that the prevalence of STIs in the adult film industry is actually reflective of the general population. If you think about it, the people who perform in this industry are nearly constantly engaged in sexual role-playing, and since they are actors, they are also likely to be aware of the many different ways that they can contract an STI once they become exposed to it.

While performers do face a high rate of contracting infections, they also face a low rate of actual diagnoses. Unfortunately, because of this, there is a possibility that a performer could contract an STI while working in the adult industry. If you suspect that you or a co-worker may have an STI, it is important that they get screened for any infections before they are offered work at any adult website or adult entertainment company. By screening them ahead of time, you can ensure that they will not only be on the safe side, but that you can avoid the complications that come with infections caught during screening. There are many reasons why screening is important in this industry; by taking advantage of the educational materials that the adult industry medical care foundation provides, you can protect yourself, your family, and others.
